Prospects

I just got part-time work as a massage practitioner, starting tomorrow. Scary! I can't yet call myself a "CMT" (Certified Massage Therapist), but I can still work in the field. School continues to go well; I'm about halfway through!

I've also been asked to put together an eCommerce site for our favorite local store, Mountain Mystic. It'll probably go up using one of MivaMerchant's templates so we can launch for the holidays (MivaMerchant is new to me, but I'll wade through). We hope to eventually put a nicely designed face on the upcoming site, with additional bells and whistles, but first things first…

Bonfire

Summer party season is well in swing. Last weekend Meredith held a post-video-shoot party with a big bonfire. Maddy joined Kevin and me, and we hung out watching more fire artists and Yamina, the same belly dancer Kevin and I enjoyed at the Pirate's Feast in 2005. (I really miss belly dance classes!) Here are a few pics, click to see more:

Happy Summer Solstice!

DC Fire Conclave Video Shoot

Kevin and I are participating with the DC Fire Conclave team for this year's Burning Man. Last Saturday we had a video shoot, and in addition to being a fire safety, I took photos. Coming soon: The U.S. vs. John Lennon (the trailer looked quite interesting).

Truth

Saw An Inconvenient Truth last week. Everyone should go see An Inconvenient Truth — no matter your political leanings! (Or rent the DVD when it's available.) I believe AIT is one of the most important movies you could ever see. It's very well put together and engaging to the last. Scary too, in a non-hyped, just-the-facts-ma'am kinda way. Please learn more about what you can do to help stave off global warming at the associated web sites, ClimateCrisis.net, StopGlobalWarming.org, and NativeEnergy.com.

If large portions of Greenland or the Arctic breaks off as scientists fear (and the signs are strong that it could happen soon, within our lifetimes), sea levels will rise 20 feet in a very short period of time.

"The science is overwhelming and undeniable." The slide which compared scientific journal articles with mainstream media on the topic of global warming was striking. In a survey of 900(0?) science journal articles (peer reviewed, etc.), not a single one gave creedence to those who say global warming isn't happening. But when it came to mass media, over 50% gave equal weight to counter arguments by pseudo-scientists. I guess that's what we get with so-called "impartial, balanced" journalism, i.e. a skewed view of reality. Culture shouts … truth whispers.

Sadly, I fear there won't be enough people who will change their habits to really make a difference, unless they're coerced by benefits in the form of tax breaks or other incentives. My niece may grow up knowing she's living in a world that's rapidly changing for the worse.

I wonder if my first husband still teaches his geology & earth sciences college students that global warming is a left-wing invention. Or has he yet been forced to admit and teach that it's for real? I delight at that thought.

PDF DeCompression

Playa Del Fuego (PDF) is a regional burn held twice a year in Delaware. We haven't been to it, but know others who have gone. Our friend Scott and his wife Linda (a.k.a. Wineman and Winebabe, because Scott makes a wide array of delicious fruit and regular wines) held a PDF DeCompression, essentially an after-event party. They're conveniently only an hour away in Harpers Ferry (yes, that's convenient to us out here in the country), so we went, met a lot of fun and creative folks, and got to watch more people play with fire.

Dickerson Wedding

Our friends Adriene and Adam got married! Visit my Dickerson Wedding travelogue, view the slide-type presentation, or click on a photo below to see more:
