Where did the last week go? Heck, where did the year go?

I've lost three more pounds, yay!

Weekend Folly

Thanksindians might have been unusual this year. Initially my brother was going to be working and my mom thought she'd spend the holiday with friends in New Jersey. Out of curiosity I'd seriously considered going to a Vegetarian Thanksgiving Feast at a local Quaker church (saw a little notice at REI). Then my brother got the day off, so Mom changed her plans too.

Therefore I cooked Thanksindians dinner. It turned out okay, but I've done better when it wasn't prescribed Thanksgiving fare. The small 8 lb. turkey was a little tough (though not dry) … I think I'll veto that idea next time in favor of Chicken Brie with Brandy and Mushrooms.

Afterwards I dropped in at Wunderland and then drove up to Michelle and John's. Kevin had joined them for a vegetarian meal and I made it just in time for dessert. We watched another Phillip Seymour Hoffman movie, Happiness. It was all about people with outstretched arms running towards each other through fields of flowers. Trust me.

Friday I worked a little and then Michelle called and invited me along to visit her friend Alan in Arlington. What a groovy place Alan has! I was a dodo and forgot to actually take a photo of him, but I did manage to capture two of his more interesting chairs.

Alan was the perfect host, whipping up a Thai lemongrass and coconut soup in a matter of minutes when we got munchy (the lemongrass grows in his yard). We spun grooves on CD and vinyl (he's got some Eddie Harris that's new to me), talked culture and politics, etc., and had a great trip overall. I enjoyed seeing another much-hailed movie, True Romance. Gary Oldman was, as usual, delicious in the role of a weirdo. Mmmm, Gary Oldman…

Tintin comic.Anyway, Alan introduced us to the nearby Metro 29 Diner and Restaurant (4711 Lee Hwy., Arlington. 703-528-2464). It's only a decade old but it's still wonderful with glass and chrome and some exceptionally pretty short-skirted waitresses (ours was intense and quietly ravishing and spoke French to a neighboring table). The diner is upscale and my thick-sliced Challah French Toast was so good I didn't bother with syrup. The three of us took an enormous slice of delicious chocolate dessert back to Alan's and couldn't finish it.

Sunday Kevin and I drove into DC, ate a late lunch at Ben's Chili Bowl and traipsed around Dupont Circle (where I got myself a Snowy keychain from the Tintin comic at right) and later Bethesda. I found a couple presents for people and we watched Lost In Translation again (I loved it the first time with Rash, but it was a little too esoteric for Kevin).
