Journal (The Ember Update)Thursday, August 30BirthdayToday is my birthday. I'm 34. I'm looking for internet jobs in the greater San Francisco Bay area, and I'm also available for contract or freelance work. I've worked in the web field for 6 years. View my in-progress résumé or my evolving web portfolio. My specialties:
After looking through various career search sites, I see pickings are slim, and lots of people are out of work in the industry. I've also been a picture framer, and I worked on a fishing charter in the Chesapeake Bay as the mate some years ago. I've raced sailboats. Though it's now out of date, I have my teaching certificate. Perhaps these additional skills will somehow aid me in finding good work. We'll see. Believe in yourself, and what others think won't matter. - Emerson
Wednesday, August 22Buckets of rainSometimes life is about turmoil. My father died unexpectedly twenty days ago. He was a whole continent away from home. Eleven days ago my D.C. apartment flooded with sewer water. I lost my home and an estimated $12,000 worth of my belongings. My renter's insurance doesn't cover flooding or sewer damage. Today I was told by my employers that if I move to California (something we've been talking about and negotiating for 8 months), they'll cease to keep me as a full-time employee and ask me to become a contractor/freelancer. They'll give me work when they have it. Right now, with the slow summer months and the downturn in the economy and industry, they don't have any billable work for me (or anyone for that matter). If I stay, I can't be guaranteed I'll have a job in a month anyway, as they may very shortly be considering a round of lay-offs. We had been looking forward to working through any telecommuting issues. If things went well, there was even talk of possibly opening a San Francisco office. Anyway, I may shift to contractor or freelance status, even though I know times in the internet industry are hard everywhere. As my dad would say, there's always room for someone good, and I'm good at what I do. Please let me know if you might have a project or job for me. I'm reminded of the Chinese curse: May you live in interesting times.
